I think social media has really pushed us to our creative limits. It seems we're forever brainstorming ideas for Instagram posts, Facebook artwork and editorials. When you work within a niche—such as footwear and accessories—you get pretty creative, pretty fast. Here are five backdrops and mini-sets that have worked for us.
1. REINDEER MOSS
For our 2014 Summer Issue of Heaven Has Heels magazine I wanted to create an underwater-themed accessories shoot. While trolling the flower district in Midtown Manhattan I stumbled across this beautifully colored Reindeer Moss. Available in a variety of colors, this versatile material can be reused and is perfect for adding color and texture to any image.
I had this concept for a print-on-print photo shoot for quite a while. Finally, my creative partner-in-crime, fashion photographer Jason Setiawan, and I were able to put it to the test in our 2015 Summer Issue of Heaven Has Heels. I love how it turned out.
3. NEON CARDBOARD
Sometimes we get so caught up in our own creativity that we forget the basics. How many of us created school projects with nothing but colored cardboard? The same goes for photographic backdrops—particularly of still life images. This shoot from our 2014 November Play Issue of Heaven Has Heels was intended to be bright and playful, pairing jewelry with well known boardgames. I simply taped one side of the cardboard to the wall, the other, to a table.
5. POPPY SEEDS
When you work for a "themed" accessory magazine, you have to be fairly creative. So it was, that we used Poppy Seeds as the backdrop for this shoot entitled, Against the Grain (first published in the 2014 November Issue of Heaven Has Heels magazine).
